The historical neighborhood of Deep Deuce is a district of Central Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This was home to the Aldridge Theater of Zelia Breaux and Dr. W. H. Slaughter's Slaughter Building and Slaughter's Hall of Cove Pharmacy. Author Ralph Waldo Ellison was also born in the area and wrote about the neighborhood extensively. Currently the area consists mainly of low-rise residential buildings (built predominantly in the 2000s) and combined buildings and shops that were formerly empty.
Deep Deuce was a regional center of jazz and blues and black culture and trade, mostly during the 1920s and 1930s. The main African-American downtown area in Oklahoma City in the 1940s and 1950s was situated a few blocks north of Bricktown and focused on NE 2nd Street. Musician Jimmy Rushing, swing and jazz guitarist Charlie Christian, the famous Blue Devils, Count Basie, Gonzelle White, the bands of King Oliver, as well as Ida Cox, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Mamie Smith were notable musicians who attributed to the vibrant jazz past of Deep Deuce.
Furthermore, Most of the other African-American population of the town relocated to other locations within Oklahoma City during the civil rights revolution of the 1960s. Government order dismantled most of the neighborhood in the 1980s to make room for I-235, but the present downtown rise and regeneration have once again made this part of the city appealing to developers.
